Electric Scooter Range Explained
Range is the number that sells scooters and the one that disappoints most buyers. Understanding where the figure comes from makes it useful again.
Where the claimed range comes from
Manufacturers measure range under ideal conditions: a rider of around 70 kg, flat ground, a steady 15–20 km/h in the most economical mode, mild weather and a brand-new battery. None of those apply to a 90 kg rider in a hilly city on a cold morning in sport mode. Expect 60–75% of the claimed figure in everyday use, less in winter.
The number that predicts range: watt-hours
Battery capacity in watt-hours (voltage × amp-hours) is the honest measure of how much energy a scooter carries. A typical commuter uses roughly 15–25 Wh per kilometre depending on weight, speed and terrain. A 500 Wh battery therefore gives a realistic 20–33 km; a 1,000 Wh pack 40–65 km. If a scooter claims 60 km from 360 Wh, be sceptical.
What eats range
- Speed: wind resistance grows with the square of speed; riding at 30 km/h instead of 20 can cost a third of your range.
- Rider weight and hills: both demand more current, and current is what drains a battery.
- Cold: lithium cells deliver less energy below about 10 °C; winter range can drop 20–30%.
- Under-inflated tires: rolling resistance climbs quickly as pressure falls.
- Stop-start riding: acceleration costs far more than cruising.
- Battery age: expect gradual capacity loss over hundreds of cycles.
How to get more
Keep tires at the recommended pressure, use the middle riding mode for most of the journey, accelerate smoothly, use regenerative braking where it is adjustable, and keep the battery above 20% when you can. If you regularly need more, a second charger at your destination is cheaper than a bigger scooter.
How we present range
On this site the range field is always labelled “manufacturer-claimed”. Where we have ridden a scooter and measured range ourselves, the product page says so, with the rider weight, route and temperature, so you can judge how the number was obtained.
