Electric Scooter Maintenance Guide
Electric scooters are simple machines, and most breakdowns come from a handful of neglected items: tire pressure, brake adjustment, loose fasteners and battery care. A short routine prevents nearly all of them.
Before every ride (30 seconds)
- Squeeze both brakes and roll the scooter a metre to feel them bite.
- Glance at the tires for cuts, embedded glass and obvious softness.
- Check the folding latch is fully locked and the stem has no play.
- Confirm the lights work if you will be out after dusk.
Weekly
- Tire pressure with a gauge, to the pressure printed on the sidewall or in the manual. Under-inflation is the number-one cause of punctures and poor range.
- Wipe the deck and stem; check that the charging-port cover closes.
- Look for loose bolts on the stem clamp, handlebars, fenders and brake calipers.
Monthly
- Brake pads: replace disc pads at about 1 mm of material; adjust cable tension so the lever bites in the first third of travel.
- Tire tread and sidewall cracks; rotate or replace as needed.
- Folding mechanism: clean grit from the latch and apply a drop of light oil to the pivot.
- Check for firmware updates in the manufacturer’s app and read the notes before installing.
Seasonally
- Bearings: spin each wheel and listen for grinding; replace sealed bearings if they are rough.
- Suspension: check for leaks on hydraulic units and cracks on rubber cartridges.
- Battery health: note the range on a familiar route and compare with the previous season.
- Winter storage: see our battery guide — store at around 50% charge, indoors, and top up monthly.
When to see a technician
Error codes on the display, a motor that stutters or clicks, brakes that pull to one side after adjustment, any swelling or smell from the battery, and water damage all warrant a professional look. Do not open a battery pack yourself.
